Ворчать, припоминать старые обиды. В прошлом моряки, уходя в плавание, не имели ни мороженой, ни консервированной пищи. Главным продуктом в далёких путешествиях была солёная свинина. Ни одна часть этого животного не пропадала зря: даже кусочки кожи сохранялись на крайний случай. Когда запасы пищи совсем истощались, каждому члену экипажа выдавалось немного кожи. Кожа была жёсткой и невкусной, но прослойка жира, оставшаяся на ней, была всё-таки какой-то едой. Chewing the fat — «жевание жира» — было долгим делом и давало возможность морякам не жаловаться на жизнь и вспоминать лучшие времена. Когда эта фраза впервые появилась в печати (около 1870 г.), она стала обозначать пустую бессмысленную болтовню.
